The constant of proportionality \(k\) is the constant ratio \(\dfrac{y}{x}\) in a proportional relationship.

\(k\) is the unit rate β€” the value of \(y\) when \(x=1\).

How to find k

  1. Pick a point \((x,y)\) on the line.
  2. Divide \(y\) by \(x\).
  3. That quotient is \(k\).
  4. Write \(y=kx\).

A line through the origin passes \((4,12)\). Find \(k\).
Solution

Divide.
