Theory

In a relationship between two quantities:

  • The independent variable is the input β€” you choose it (the \(x\)-axis).
  • The dependent variable is the output β€” it depends on the input (the \(y\)-axis).
Ask “what depends on what?” The result is the dependent variable.

How to identify the variables

  1. Find the two quantities.
  2. Ask which one depends on the other.
  3. The cause/input is independent (\(x\)).
  4. The result/output is dependent (\(y\)).

A car's distance depends on time. Name the variables.

Distance depends on time.
