Theory

Surface area comes in two forms:

  • Lateral surface area — the side surfaces only, excluding the base(s).
  • Total surface area — the lateral area plus the base(s).

For a cylinder the lateral surface unrolls into a rectangle of width \(2\pi r\) (the circumference) and height \(h\), giving lateral area \(2\pi rh\). For a prism, lateral area is perimeter times height.

Total = lateral + bases. Whether you include the bases depends on the problem (a can with no lid, an open box, etc.).

Lateral versus total surface area.

Lateral areas:

How to find lateral and total area

  1. Lateral: the side surface — \(2\pi rh\) or perimeter \(\times h\).
  2. Add the base(s) for total surface area.
  3. Read the problem to see if bases are included (open vs closed).
Example 1 — Lateral area of a cylinder
Find the lateral surface area of a cylinder with radius \(3\) and height \(5\) (leave \(\pi\)).
Solution

The lateral surface is the curved side only.

\(\text{lateral}\)\(=\)\(2\pi rh=2\pi(3)(5)=30\pi\)

Example 2 — Total surface area
For the same cylinder, find the total surface area.
Solution

Add the two circular bases to the lateral area.

\(\text{total}\)\(=\)\(30\pi+2\pi(3)^2\)
\(=\)\(30\pi+18\pi=48\pi\)
the total surface area is 48 pi
Example 3 — The difference
How much of the surface is the two bases?
Solution

Subtract lateral from total.

\(48\pi-30\pi\)\(=\)\(18\pi\)

Example 4 — Lateral area of a prism
A prism has base perimeter \(20\) and height \(7\). Find its lateral surface area.
Solution

Lateral area of a prism is perimeter times height.

\(\text{lateral}\)\(=\)\(20\times 7=140\)
the lateral area is 140 square units

Common pitfalls

Lateral area excludes the bases; total area includes them.
A cylinder has two bases — add \(2\pi r^2\) for total.
Check open vs closed: a tube, can, or box may have fewer faces.
