Theory

Measures of spread describe variability:
  • Range: maximum minus minimum.
  • IQR: \(Q_3-Q_1\), the middle-half spread.
  • MAD: the average distance from the mean.
Larger spread means more variable data.

Spread:

MAD averages \(|x-\bar x|\).

How to measure spread

  1. Range: subtract the smallest from the largest.
  2. IQR: subtract \(Q_1\) from \(Q_3\).
  3. MAD: average the absolute deviations from the mean.
  4. Compare to judge variability.
